A 3-minute reset you can do on a video call

On a video call you cannot stand up, stretch your arms or roll your head without everyone noticing. You can still reset in three minutes with movements that stay inside the frame: slow breathing, shoulder blade glides, chin nods, wrist and forearm mobility, and a small seated rotation between two sentences. Nobody notices, your shoulders do.

What can you do without being noticed?

Anything below the frame, and anything small enough to read as attentive listening. Shoulder blades gliding back and down, a slow chin nod, wrists and forearms opening under the desk, ankles circling, a tall breath. Save the big movements, arms overhead or a full neck roll, for the minute after the call ends.

Why bother for three minutes?

Because three minutes is what you actually have. A meta-analysis of 22 studies found that micro-breaks of ten minutes or less have a small but significant effect on vigour and fatigue, and that longer breaks help performance more. Three minutes will not replace a walk; it will stop the shoulders from spending the whole afternoon next to your ears.

A three-minute sequence

Camera on or off, the sequence is the same. Move slowly, keep the face still, and stop at any discomfort.

  • Thirty seconds: comfortable seated breathing, feet flat, exhale a little longer than you inhale.
  • Forty-five seconds: shoulder blade glides, back and down, then release, six slow repetitions.
  • Thirty seconds: chin nods, small and slow.
  • Forty-five seconds: wrist and forearm mobility, palms turning up and down on the thighs, fingers spreading.
  • Thirty seconds: seated rotation, hands on the thighs, a gentle turn to each side while you listen.

What about the camera?

Keep your head roughly where it was. The movements above do not move the face more than a nod would. When the camera is off, add a slow neck side tilt to each side. And once the call ends, take the sixty seconds you would otherwise spend scrolling to stand up and open the chest.
